Awards and Honors

Tracy Fisher (M.Ed., '98) was one of five metropolitan teachers to receive the 2007 Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award, which recognizes educators who exemplify the best practices of quality childhood teaching. Fisher, a pre-K teacher at the Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies, is a mid-career changer who gave up a career in the film and television industry to become an educator. But her Hollywood experiences haven't been lost: she regularly uses drama, visual arts and music to foster creativity and learning in her classroom.

Dr. Sherry Eagle (Ed.D, '70) was awarded the 2006 Alumni Achievement Award—the Alumni Association's top honor—for her outstanding success in education. Continuing the College of Education's tradition of partnership, Eagle is currently the executive director of the Institute for Collaboration at Aurora University. In that position, she helps strengthen the connection between teacher preparation and induction. Prior to this, she served as Superintendent of Aurora West School District for 12 years. Among her achievements during her tenure was the construction of three new partnership schools in Aurora and a fourth housed on the university campus in the new Institute building.

Dr. Margaret Small (Ed.D, '01) was honored with the 2006 UIC Alumni Association City Partner Award, which recognizes the impact UIC alumni have on the region. Small is the founder and director of the Young Women's Leadership Charter School, the only all-girls public school in Chicago. In only its sixth year of existence and with non-selective admissions, YWLCS ranked first among non-selective public schools for both graduation rates and college attendance rates on the Chicago Public Schools system-wide report card. It leads the city in the percentage of freshman graduating in five years and in the percentage of graduates enrolled in college or post-secondary education.

College of Education advances seven places on the U.S. News and World Report ranking of Colleges of Education

The UIC College of Education tied for 35th position on the list of the best graduate schools of education, up from 42nd, according to the most recent survey of higher education institutions compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

"We're always pleased to be included in the U.S. News listings," says COE Dean Victoria Chou. "There are many measures of the quality and excellence of academic institutions and this ranking contributes to the overall recognition that our College is very well regarded."
