PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS AND ACTIVITIES

Trustee, National Council of Teachers of English Research Foundation (2007-2010); Column Editor, "Issues in Urban Literacy", The Reading Teacher (2007-2010)

Research Activities: My main research activity at this time centers around three Early Reading First projects, Charting a Course to Literacy Early Reading First (CCL-ERF, 2006-2010), Achieving Preschool Language and Literacy Excellence (APLLE, 2008-2011), and Instructional Model Program for All Children and Teachers: Early Language and Literacy Excellence (IMPACT, 2009-2012). In CCL-ERF, we have established a partnership between the University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Literacy and three Chicago Public Schools Charter Schools. In APLLE and IMPACT we are working with a total of ten Archdiocese of Chicago schools. Over the course of each project, we are creating in these urban preschool classrooms centers of early literacy excellence by enhancing instruction and classroom environments. The projects' design relies heavily on scientifically-based research practices in language, cognition, and early literacy; an intensive coaching model; and an innovative, nationally recognized approach to project evaluation.
