Curriculum & Instruction

A Message from the Chair

We are a community of more than 30 faculty and 500 undergraduate and graduate students who are engaged in critical scholarship, practice, and praxis that address the most pressing issues in education, both locally and globally. The Department develops scholars, researchers and leaders in the areas of curriculum and instruction, literacy (language and culture), math and science education, bilingual/ESL education and teacher education through undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. course work and through research. Our programs are designed to attract students who are committed to social, racial, and economic justice.

Dr. Danny Martin
Chair of Curriculum & Instruction

In our work--teaching, research, and partnerships with entities outside UIC we foreground a common understanding that society is and has always been marked by inequalities along the lines of race, class, gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. We recognize that educational institutions have served as sites where these inequalities have been simultaneously perpetuated and resisted. We also situate education and schooling within the context of larger sociopolitical forces like globalization and local forces such as neighborhood gentrification.

Our work in the Department supports the mission of the College of Education by preparing high-quality educators and researchers who can work effectively in Chicago neighborhood schools, institutions of higher education, and other urban educational and community agencies and who become leaders in urban education locally, nationally, and internationally.

We are particularly pleased with the recognition that our work has recently received, as our Department was ranked 1st in scholarly productivity by Academic Analytics. I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our faculty, students, and programs.
