Curriculum Studies, Ph.D.

Degree Program

The Curriculum Studies concentration in the Ph.D. Program in Curriculum and Instruction enables students to receive a core of basic knowledge germane to the field of curriculum studies and relevant to both the processes of curriculum development and the critique of extant curriculum materials, practices and policies. Central to the program is engagement around "what's worthwhile" questions, such as: What is worthwhile to know, experience, need, do, be, become, overcome, share, and contribute? Who decides and who should decide such matters, and who benefits from the decisions. We encourage our students to use these questions as a frame as they theorize, do research and contribute to the improvement of practice. This program is highly visible nationally as well as internationally due to the fact that the main advisers for this program are scholars at the forefront of the curriculum studies community. The Ph.D. Program in Curriculum Studies in the department of Curriculum and Instruction also offers a specialization in Mathematics Education. In addition to the core knowledge described above, doctoral students with this specialization develop a focus on issues, factors, and policies related to the teaching and learning of mathematics, especially for addressing the needs of underrepresented students. As with the general Curriculum Studies concentration, the specialization in Mathematics Education is highly visible nationally and internationally because of its faculty.
