Departments
Department of Curriculum & Instruction
The Curriculum and Instruction Department prepares students to become high quality elementary and secondary teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels and enriches the work of practicing educators by providing opportunities for further education and professional development.
The Department also develops scholars, researchers and leaders in curriculum and instruction, literacy (language and culture), math and science education, bilingual/ESL education and teacher education through Ph.D. course work and research.
Department of Educational Policy Studies
The Educational Policy Studies Department offers programs of graduate study and opportunities for research in the social foundations of education, educational organizations and leadership, and education policy analysis.
The Department's work emphasizes the analysis of urban contexts and understanding and addressing educational problems in those contexts. Its programs prepare persons for successful careers in urban educational research and policy analysis and in transformational leadership of urban schools.
Department of Educational Psychology
The Department of Educational Psychology offers wide-ranging work extending from teacher education to research that investigates cultural and interactive processes and influences on social and cognitive functioning, collaborative and individual learning, evaluation and measurement of learning outcomes, student attributes, the application of instructional media, and basic research on the application of statistical procedures to problems of educational measurement and evaluation.
Graduates of our Master's programs teach young children with and without disabilities, guide youth in social and cultural activities, and work in institutions of testing, measurement, and evaluation. Graduates of our doctoral program work as professors in higher education and in applied fields as researchers, administrators, and social-policy analysts.
Department of Special Education
The Special Education Department is a graduate school community of dedicated scholars, researchers, teachers, and practitioners working toward innovation and access to improve the education of children and adolescents with disabilities - particularly in urban school environments. The community is also a forceful advocate for special education through myriad outreach service programs and vanguard research in Chicago and beyond.
The Special Education Department offers an array of exemplary programs that prepare individuals to make significant contributions to the field of special education.
