Literacy, Language & Culture, M.Ed.

Degree Program

The Master's of Education in Instructional Leadership: Literacy, Language & Culture program provides students with high-quality advanced training in Literacy Education that enables them to understand and foster children’s and adolescents’ language and literacy development. The program is intended for students who wish to advance their knowledge of:

  • literacy or literacy instruction in elementary classrooms, secondary classrooms, and alternative settings
  • literacy research and its impact on practice
  • strategies to support teacher inquiry in literacy

Students in the program may work toward a State of Illinois Reading Teacher Endorsement (Strand A), Reading Specialist certification (State of Illinois Type 10, grades K-12) (Strand B), or a non-certification option (Strand C) while earning the M.Ed. degree. In addition, the program prepares those who may eventually pursue doctoral studies in Education, Psychology, English, and other related fields. The program also provides background for those seeking to enter literacy-related fields such as publishing, adult literacy education, or clinical teaching.
