Literacy, Language, and Culture, Ph.D.

Degree Program

Our program is grounded in the commitment that language and literacy skills are essential to every aspect of an individual. Candidates study and research the factors that put children or youth at a disadvantage as well as those assets -- family, community, or cultural -- that support high levels of academic, social, and character development and, in turn, effective schools. The concentration prepares students to investigate these issues from multiple perspectives: the individual level; the school level; the neighborhood or community level; and the national and international levels, where expansive cultural concerns such as immigration, multiculturalism, and economic mobility are significant influences.
