Profs. Varelas and Superfine are named 2012 Researchers of the Year
January 11, 2013

College of Education professors Maria Varelas and Benjamin Superfine  have been named 2012 Researchers of the Year in the social sciences by UIC's Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

Varelas has been named a Distinguished Researcher for advancing promising approaches for science education, in particular at the lower grades for youth in urban, low-income schools. She has done so by highlighting the potential value of integrating literacy and science instruction within a culturally-informed framework of pedagogy.

Superfine earned the Rising Star commendation for his work  interdisciplinary approach that synthesizes insights from education policy, law, history and political science to understand potential impacts on current U.S. education reform efforts.

Congratulations to Varelas and Superfine!
