Mary Bay      [profile]
Dr. Bay studies teacher learning and teacher education as they pertain to educating urban youth with disabilities. In particular, her work focuses on mentored learning to teach, mentor preparation, and the infusion of culturally responsive teaching into special education teacher preparation programs.
Joseph J. Becker      [profile]

Research interests include theories of intellectual development, semiotic aspects of cognition, children's understanding in mathematics and science. My most recent work concerns the possibilities of using ideas derived from constructivist cognitive theories as a basis for scientific approaches to consciousness.

Teaching interests include courses on philosophy of educational inquiry, cognition from a constructivist perspective, constructivist approaches for early childhood, mathematical cognition. A particular favorite of mine is a course designed to help students create and refine a focus for their thesis work.

Adrian S. Capehart      [profile]

Dr. Capehart teaches the first and second field-based courses in the teacher preparation sequence. Through the use of textual materials, class assignments and experiences in local schools, juniors are exposed to real world of urban education.

While much of his time has been devoted to teaching these courses, his primary area of interest lies eleswhere. He is an historian by training and is also interested in teaching courses such as Social Studies and the Arts or Literature, Social Studies and the Arts.

He is especially interested in issues revolving around migration and immigration. I find the movement of people across both national and international borders fascinating. His dissertation examined the migration of Africans to Chicago since 1960. Because of the ongoing demographic shifts, he continues to explore this topic.

Victoria Chou      [profile]
Dr. Chou's current work addresses how particularities of the urban context should influence literacy education, the education of teachers, and schools of education.
