Degree Program
The Secondary Education M.Ed. program is designed to prepare future teachers for urban classrooms, particularly in Chicago Public Schools The Secondary Education concentration in the M.Ed. in Instructional Leadership leads to initial teaching certification in English and History (State of Illinois, grades 6-12); and initial certification in French, German, and Spanish (State of Illinois, grades K-12). Students who desire initial teacher certification in some disciplines in secondary education may also apply to master's programs in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences: The Department of History offers an M.A.T. Degree in the teaching of history and the Department of English offers secondary English certification through their M.A. degree. Initial certification in secondary mathematics is available only through the department of mathematics.
For those interested in secondary science, the program offers initial teacher certification in five science areas: biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental science and physics. In secondary science there are two options: a one-year program and a two-year program.
