EDPS 566: Cultural Studies in Education (Spring 2021)
Examines origins, evolution, and current frameworks of cultural studies, with a focus on educational policy and practice. Some of the more specific topics within Cultural Studies that will be covered in Spring 2021 will include: cultural politics of education, political economy of education, subjectivity formation, disaster politics, technology in education and popular culture, gender, globalization, race and disciplinary power, biopolitics, resilience, populism and authoritarianism, neoliberalism and corporate school reform, art and public culture, reality television.
EDPS 594: Special Topics: Critical Issues in Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies in Education (Fall 2020)
This course examines the rise of new technologies in educational policy and practice. It investigates how new technologies in education including Artificial Intelligence, Adaptive Learning, Blockchain, biometrics, and IoT are transforming how people think about teaching and learning, knowledge, self, and society. The course studies how they are being used to further and deepen longstanding educational, political, economic, and cultural agendas, interests, and ideologies and what emancipatory possibilities these technologies facilitate.
EDPS 543: The Criminalization of Youth in Urban Schools, with Nicole Nguyen (Spring 2018)
Using contemporary social theory, this course investigates the disciplining, punishing, and criminalization of youth in urban schools, paying particular attention to the racialized, classed, gendered, and ableist contours of these social processes.
EDPS 555: Political Economy of Urban Education, with Pauline Lipman (Spring 2018)
Politics of urban school policy and practice. Interest groups, school boards, educators, citizens, and governments as political actors. Educational leadership in political context. Currently, the course focuses on the contested, interrelated dynamics of urban education policy and neoliberal capitalism, white supremacy, and urban restructuring. Topics include: school closings and privatization and urban displacement/gentrification, education policy and racist state violence, grassroots education movements and social movements for racial and economic justice.
EDPS 588: Critical Race Theory: Race and Racism in Education, with David Stovall (Spring 2018)
Examines theories of race and racism in education within the interdisciplinary construct of Critical Race Theory.
EDPS 549: Critical Pedagogy: Practice and Theory, with Rico Gutstein (Fall 2017)
Examine theory and practice of social justice teaching in schools, including: history liberatory pedagogies, culturally relevant and critical pedagogies, funds of knowledge, critical multiculturalism and anti-racist pedagogy, critical race theory.
