Title: High School Staff’s Support of Undocumented Students and the Role of the Local Context
Abstract:
Undocumented students encounter formidable obstacles in transitioning to college due to legal exclusion from the federal government. High School staff, such as postsecondary counselors, are at the frontline of supporting undocumented students navigate legal exclusion. High School staff, however, conduct their work within varying local contexts. Drawing on 50 interviews with high school staff in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, this presentation examines how the local context shapes their ability to support undocumented students’ college transitions. The presentation will discuss how the local context impacts the sources of knowledge and resources available to high school staff, the challenges they encounter in their role, and their ability to create a welcoming environment.
