About

Emily Demsetz, EdM, is the Early Childhood Research Specialist at UIC’s Collaborative for Young Children and Families. Emily’s interests include (1) the impact of peer-to-peer connection and mentorship on educational attainment, professional identity, and well-being, and (2) the importance of imaginative and cooperative play in the classroom and in therapeutic contexts. Before coming to UIC, Emily worked in non-profit development for organizations focused on college access/workforce development and family mental health, managing portfolios of $8M+ and leading strategic initiatives, designing communications campaigns, and stewarding diverse partners. She has also worked in several early childhood education settings as a floater and substitute teacher, and as a respite care provider and caregiver for children and adults with disabilities. Emily holds a master’s degree in Human Development and Education from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from U.C. Berkeley. She loves exploring the outdoors with family and friends, painting, and playing traditional Korean drums.
