Professor Gholdy Muhammad Named John Corbally Professor

John Corbally Professor Gholdy Muhammad

Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda has appointed Professor Gholdy Muhammad as the John Corbally Professor, an endowed title with endowed funds.

She is the second person to earn this prestigious honor. Dr. Paula Allen-Meares, UIC Chancellor Emerita, is the only other person to receive this distinction.

Gholdy shines a light on the UIC College of Education nationally through her scholarship, publications, speaking engagements and teaching. She is a respected and distinguished educator whose leadership exemplifies the values and vision of UIC.

This professorship is named after John E. Corbally, who served as the University of Illinois president from 1971-1980. At the beginning of his presidency, the University was the ninth-largest university in the nation, with 60,000 students. Research and construction were growing. To meet demand, Corbally sought outside funding and assisted the University of Illinois Foundation in launching the first university-wide capital campaign, raising more than $130 million from donors. Corbally led the effort to successfully override a veto from the legislature in the 1977 fiscal year, restoring about half the funds for increases in faculty salaries. He accomplished this by enlisting the support of students, parents and alumni to lobby the state legislators to redress the problems of inadequate support. He is also credited for laying the groundwork for the establishment of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
