The mission of the Call Me MiSTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) Initiative is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background, particularly among the lowest performing elementary schools. Student participants are largely selected from among under-served, socio-economically disadvantaged and educationally at-risk communities.
The Call Me MiSTER program is contributing to the talent pool of excellent teachers by identifying and supporting students who are literally "touching the future" by teaching children.
The program provides:
- Tuition assistance for admitted students pursuing approved programs of study in teacher education at participating colleges.
- An academic support system to help assure their success.
- A cohort system for social and cultural support.
- Assistance with job placement.
The first Call Me MiSTER cohort will begin at the UIC College of Education in Fall 2018.
To qualify for the Call Me MiSTER program, students must be accepted into the BA Urban Education - Elementary Education program.
Additionally, students must complete the Call Me MiSTER application.
There is a need for more male role models in the classroom. The College of Education at UIC is striving to lead that charge for Chicagoland schools and beyond. In order to increase the pipeline of men ready to teach and lead, it is essential that we provide our MiSTERs with the necessary resources to place them in the best position to positively impact the lives of children and young adults.
With the rising costs associated with higher education, providing our MiSTERS with the foundation of being able to remain in the program is vital. A gift at one of the following giving levels will provide financial need based scholarships:
Career Preparation Assistance
Our MiSTERS receive a comprehensive program that surrounds and fully engages them year round to ensure optimal success. A gift to one of the following areas will provide assistance to help our MiSTERS meet the additional costs and reach their capacity:
-Attending National Education Conferences: $1,500
-Teacher Exam & Licensure Fees: $1,000
