- UIC Disability Cultural Center – Community Care Cohort Internship
The Disability Cultural Center’s Community Care Cohort Internship program explores disability justice, mutual aid/care work, abolition, healing justice, and more. The internship is an opportunity for students to take a deep dive into learning about community care and mutual aid, build skills (facilitation, relationship building, consensus decision making, etc.), and to practice leading their own care projects with the support of the DCC staff. - Volunteer Mentor (unpaid) – Gateway to the Great Outdoors is seeking college volunteers to help run our environmental programming for 4th – 8th grade classes in the area. This is a great opportunity to get into the classroom and connect with the local community. - New Life Volunteering Society – Volunteer Executive Tutoring Chair
NLVS is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the underserved. Undergraduate/graduate students provide free tutoring to K-12 students (emphasis on math & reading skills). UIC College of Education students have the opportunity to gain valuable field experience by working with a tutee, family, and teacher. Tutors become familiar with IXL learning platform and Skyline Curriculum of CPS. Weekly sessions include an in-person 90-min and a virtual 30-min session, both supervised by an NLVS volunteer. The Education Intern supports Plant Chicago’s education programs; specifically the Urban
Sustainability Culinary Program, our 6 week summer camp program. The Education Intern:
Growing Food focus collaborates with the education team to maintain the outdoor growing
space, this includes watering plants, weeding and harvesting vegetables. They will also support
developing and leading new hands-on workshops related to urban agriculture. Most of the tasks
will include:
– setting up the firehouse for programming and welcoming youth participants to our
building, taking attendance.
– Ensuring outdoor garden is properly maintained (watering plants, pruning, weeding)
– Lead at least two hands-on activities per week related to growing/urban agriculture
– Help students complete daily tasks including but not limited to: harvesting produce,
cleaning aquaponics systems, and feeding chickens
– Supporting youth as needed (cooking, questions, guidance, etc).
The intern(s) will also support the general maintenance of our indoor and outdoor growing
spaces, which includes chickens, garden beds, native pollinator spaces and aquaponics
systems.
Work Dates: June 16th-August 1st. (seven weeks)
Work Schedule: Tuesday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm (total of 24 hrs per week, with two week
having the additional hours shown below)
– Additional work dates: July 11th: 9:00am -4:00pm and August 1st: 9:00am-3:00pm
Background check is required and payment will be through Chicago Youth Works at a
rate of $17.05 per hr for a total of 20 hrs per week. Plant Chicago will also provide an
additional stipend of $1,200 to support additional time.
