Principal Strategy: Poverty as Barrier to College

Principal Nia Abdullah sits at a desk in a classroom and is meeting with two teachers, discussing their lesson plans.

CPS Bowen High School principal and EdD Urban Education Leadership student Nia Abdullah is adding a new role to her portfolio.

Abdullah and her staff are seriously focused on increasing college readiness at the far south side high school, even mandating every student apply to a certain number of colleges in order to graduate.  However, college readiness takes on a new meaning for a majority low-income student population.  Check out how Abdullah is working to make sure students' basic needs, like flip flops for showers, blankets for a bed, towels, even a meager suitcase to carry their possessions in, are taken care of before students set foot on campus for the first time.
