Human Development and Learning Concentrations, Credentials and Minors

HDL students choose an optional concentration to guide their course of study. HDL students can also earn a university minor or credentials from an external accrediting institution to prepare for specific careers.

Students can earn up to two optional concentrations in HDL. Concentrations are official designations on UIC transcripts that show the student’s advanced knowledge in an HDL area of emphasis. Courses appearing in concentration requirements may be used for HDL electives and program requirement categories, when applicable. The optional concentrations are:

  • Early Childhood
  • Family Studies
  • Learning Design & Technology
  • Youth Development

Credentials Heading link

Students can take HDL courses that can lead to an Illinois Gateways Credential. Illinois Gateways Credentials are symbols of professional achievement that validate knowledge, skills and experience, as well as an individual achievement that students can be proud of. Credentials are awarded and recognized by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) Bureau of Child Care and Development. Credentials are not a substitute or an alternative to a teaching license.

Minors Heading link

Students can complement their HDL courses with a minor based on their interests. UIC offers many minors that may be of interest. Possible minors that complement HDL well are Disability and Human Development, Law and Society, Social Justice, Kinesiology, Museum Studies, Urban Studies, Psychology and Sociology.
